ENG vs IND: Not Concerned About Batting, We Just Need To Bat Longer – Jos Buttler After 1-2 ODI Series Defeat Against India

England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler began his full-time captaincy stint on the worst note possible, losing both the T20I and ODI series by a 1-2 margin to Rohit Sharma‘s men.

The ODI series was level 1-1 heading into the final match on Sunday. After putting up 259 on the board, England failed to defend the total as Rishabh Pant (125 off 113) and Hardik Pandya (71 off 55) played excellent knocks to help India chase the target.

I thought we were short on runs. We needed a good start with the ball so that was fantastic. We created chances but two guys took the game away from us, that’s where we lost the game. Not concerned about batting. All summer, in T20s and ODIs we haven’t batted our best. We just need to bat longer.

(Topley) He’s been brilliant. Got his opportunity, and was delighted for him to do well. We were trying to search for ways to get wickets. It’s been a tough schedule too.”

Reece is probably creaking a bit as well, so we need to manage our players. (Pant) When you give players a chance (missed stumping) they will hurt you. Hardik too, a half chance,” Buttler said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Notably, when Pant was batting on 19, Buttler missed a stumping chance off Moeen Ali’s bowling. The error proved to be too costly as Pant made the hosts pay, adding on 106 runs more.

The score we put up, we were going to need to take all our chances. (Being a keeper captain) I’ve found it fine, to be honest. Missed a chance today but don’t think it’s nothing to do with my captaincy,” he also added.

England will have to regroup quickly and come back to play against South Africa, who will also be visiting for a white-ball tour.
